    Job Summary

    The University of Helsinki is seeking a highly qualified Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Centre of Excellence in Nationalism Research (NARS).

    The position focuses on cultural memory and nationalism within transnational or border contexts, combining independent research with light teaching (5%) and contributions to collaborative projects and events.

    The appointment is for 36 months, starting in September 2026, with a salary ranging approximately from €3,700 to €4,000 per month.

    About the Position

    Research Focus and Environment

    The successful candidate will be part of the “Nationalism Beyond Borders” research group within NARS, based at the Department of Cultures, Folklore Studies.

    The group explores how memory shapes national allegiances and group belonging, emphasizing the role of cultural remembrance in multi- and transnational settings.

    The position offers an excellent opportunity to conduct independent research in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment, with strong support for international collaboration and career development.

    Responsibilities

    • Conduct independent research on cultural memory and nationalism in transnational or border contexts, employing memory studies approaches.
    • Contribute to the activities of the NARS research team, including organizing workshops and seminars.
    • Develop future research projects and seek external funding.
    • Participate in light teaching duties (approx. 5%).

    Location and Start Date

    The position is based in Helsinki, Finland, with the start date set for 1 September 2026. The appointee is expected to reside within the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

    Qualifications and Requirements

    • PhD in memory studies, folklore studies, ethnology, cultural studies, media studies, anthropology, or a related discipline.
    • Proven research record with the ability to undertake independent research.

    • Fluency in English, with excellent written and spoken communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
    • Candidates should have completed their doctorate within the last four years (extensions possible for justified reasons).
