The Royal Society has announced that applications are now open for the highly regarded Royal Society Wolfson Fellowships, a flagship programme designed to attract outstanding international research leaders to the United Kingdom. The fellowship scheme, jointly funded by the Royal Society and the Wolfson Foundation, aims to strengthen the UK’s research landscape by supporting world-class scientists and academics seeking to relocate from overseas.

With a submission deadline of 1 July 2026, the programme is open to both emerging and established international research leaders who are capable of driving innovation and excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

    Supporting Excellence in Research

The Royal Society Wolfson Fellowships provide long-term support to UK universities and not-for-profit research institutions, enabling them to strategically recruit leading researchers from around the world.

The scheme has two primary objectives:

    • Attract internationally recognised research leaders to UK institutions.
    • Strengthen strategic research areas by building critical masses of expertise within leading departments and research centres.

The fellowships are designed to help institutions remain globally competitive while fostering groundbreaking scientific discoveries that address major global challenges.

Two Fellowship Rounds Introduced for 2026

Following a comprehensive evaluation and feedback from applicants and host institutions, the Royal Society has introduced significant changes to the programme.

Beginning in 2026, the fellowship scheme will operate with two application rounds per year instead of three. The adjustment is intended to provide greater flexibility for applicants and institutions while maintaining a streamlined assessment process.

For the second round of 2026, nomination forms must be submitted by 24 June 2026. The Royal Society has encouraged institutions to submit nominations as early as possible to ensure candidates have sufficient time to complete their full applications.

Expanded Eligibility to Include Emerging Research Leaders

One of the most notable changes to the programme is the expansion of eligibility criteria to include emerging research leaders alongside established scholars.

The revised framework is expected to attract more talented mid-career researchers who have demonstrated international recognition and leadership in their fields.

Applicants will not be assessed based on a specific number of years of research experience. Instead, they must demonstrate:

    • Leadership of internationally recognised independent research groups.
    • Significant contributions to their field of study.
    • Evidence of global research impact and excellence.

The move reflects the Royal Society’s commitment to supporting the next generation of scientific leaders while continuing to attract distinguished senior researchers.

    Increased Flexibility for International Applicants

The fellowship programme now offers greater flexibility for researchers planning to relocate to the UK.

    Key updates include:

    • Applicants no longer need a formal employment offer at the time of application.
    • Host institutions must indicate their intention to provide a full-time equivalent position in the institutional support letter.
    • Researchers who have already moved to the UK may still apply, provided they have not normally been in the country for more than six months.
    • Applicants already residing in the UK will be required to provide a justification as part of their application.
    • Fellowship holders may begin their awards up to one year after receiving an offer, providing additional time for relocation and administrative arrangements.
    • Employment contract start dates no longer need to match fellowship start dates.

These changes are expected to make the programme more accessible and responsive to the realities of international academic recruitment.

Funding of Up to £300,000 Available

Successful applicants can receive up to five years of funding, with grants of up to £300,000 available.

    Funding may be used for:

    • Salary enhancement of up to 20% of total salary.
    • Research expenses, including consumables and fieldwork.
    • Travel and collaboration costs.
    • Small research equipment purchases.
    • Research assistant support.
    • PhD studentships.
    • Relocation and visa expenses for fellows and their dependents.

In exceptional circumstances, the overall funding cap may be exceeded to cover justified relocation and visa costs.

    Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

The Royal Society continues to place a strong emphasis on equity, diversity and inclusion throughout its funding programmes.

The organisation has reiterated its commitment to encouraging applications from researchers of all backgrounds, perspectives and experiences. By broadening participation, the Society aims to foster innovation, creativity and scientific excellence for the benefit of humanity.

The fellowship programme also includes provisions for:

    • Part-time working arrangements.
    • Support for researchers with caring responsibilities.
    • Maternity, paternity and adoption leave.
    • Extended sick leave provisions.
    • Childcare support linked to conference attendance and research visits.

Additional adjustments are available to support disabled applicants throughout the application process.

    Career Development Opportunities for Fellows

In addition to financial support, Royal Society Research Fellows gain access to a wide range of professional development opportunities.

    These include:

    • Leadership training.
    • Science communication programmes.
    • Public engagement initiatives.
    • Science policy activities.
    • Schools engagement programmes.

These opportunities are designed to help fellows enhance their impact beyond research and contribute to wider society.

Strengthening the UK’s Global Research Leadership

The Royal Society Wolfson Fellowships remain one of the UK’s most prestigious opportunities for attracting international scientific talent. By expanding eligibility, increasing flexibility and maintaining substantial financial support, the programme aims to reinforce the UK’s position as a global hub for research excellence.

As the 2026 application cycle progresses, universities and research institutions are expected to compete strongly to attract exceptional researchers capable of driving innovation and delivering transformative scientific discoveries.
