    Young researchers from eligible countries now have an opportunity to advance their academic careers in Japan after UNESCO officially opened applications for the 2026 UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowships Programme, also known as the UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme.

    The fellowship programme, funded by the Government of Japan, offers 10 competitive fellowships worth up to US$10,000 each to support postgraduate research at Japanese universities and research institutions.

    Applications for the 2026 cycle are now open, with 30 September 2026 set as the official submission deadline.

    Long-Running Fellowship Supporting Global Research

    Established in 2001 through the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Capacity-Building of Human Resources, the UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme aims to strengthen research capacity, promote international academic cooperation, and encourage innovative solutions to global challenges.

    Over the past two decades, the programme has supported 291 young researchers from 101 countries, enabling them to conduct postgraduate research while building international networks and contributing to knowledge development in areas aligned with UNESCO’s mission.

    For the 2026 cycle, the fellowship places particular emphasis on interdisciplinary research that combines science, technology, ethics, governance, sustainability, and cultural preservation.

    Fellowship Offers Research Opportunities in Japan

    Successful applicants will undertake research at Japanese universities or research institutions under the supervision of an academic mentor.

    The fellowship supports research stays lasting between three and nine months, beginning from February 2027 and ending no later than December 2027.

    The programme provides fellows with opportunities to:

    • Conduct postgraduate research in Japan.
    • Collaborate with leading Japanese academics and researchers.
    • Build international research networks.
    • Strengthen professional and academic skills.
    • Contribute to research addressing global sustainable development challenges.

    Fellowship Value and Financial Support

    Each selected fellow may receive funding of up to US$10,000 as a lump-sum grant to support approved research activities in Japan.

    The fellowship grant may cover:

    • International airfare.
    • Domestic travel within Japan.
    • Accommodation expenses.
    • Medical insurance.
    • Daily living expenses.
    • Meals and local transportation.
    • Approved research-related costs.

    However, the fellowship does not cover:

    • Tuition fees.
    • Purchase of computers or research equipment.
    • Publication costs.
    • Conference participation unless directly linked to the approved research project.

    UNESCO will arrange mandatory medical insurance for all fellows, with the insurance cost deducted from the fellowship grant before payment.

    Priority Research Areas

    Applicants must submit research proposals under one of UNESCO’s approved research themes.

    The 2026 fellowship supports research in the following areas:

    • Heritage Conservation and Management.
    • AI for Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Climate Action.
    • Ethical, Inclusive and Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development.
    • AI for Sustainable Cities, Infrastructure and Societal Resilience.
    • Artificial Intelligence and Education.

    Applicants are required to select one primary research area and one related sub-area that best reflects their proposed research project.

    The programme encourages innovative and interdisciplinary research connecting technology, sustainability, ethics, governance, education, and cultural preservation.

    Who Can Apply?

    The fellowship is open only to applicants from invited UNESCO Member States and Associate Members.

    Eligible applicants must:

    • Be nationals of one of the invited countries or territories.
    • Be 40 years old or younger at the time of application.
    • Hold at least a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification relevant to the proposed research.
    • Demonstrate strong academic achievement and research potential.
    • Have sufficient proficiency in the language used by the proposed Japanese host institution.
    • Obtain formal acceptance from an academic supervisor at a Japanese university or research institution before applying.

    Eligible Countries Include Zimbabwe and Other African Nations

    The 2026 programme invites applications from 47 African countries, including:

    • Zimbabwe
    • South Africa

    • Botswana
    • Namibia
    • Kenya

    • Tanzania

    • Rwanda

    Applications are also open to eligible candidates from selected countries and territories across:

    • Small Island Developing States.
    • Bahrain.
    • Türkiye.
    • Ukraine.
    • Several countries and territories in Asia-Pacific and the Caribbean.

    How to Apply

    UNESCO has outlined a multi-stage application process that candidates must carefully follow.

    Applicants should:

    • Read the official Application Guide.
    • Contact the National Commission for UNESCO in their home country for national application procedures.
    • Prepare all required supporting documents.
    • Submit their application to their National Commission at least two weeks before the national deadline.
    • Once nominated by the National Commission, send the online application and supporting documents to UNESCO.
    • Ensure the National Commission submits the complete nomination package to UNESCO before 30 September 2026.

    UNESCO has emphasized that only applications officially nominated by National Commissions for UNESCO will be considered.

    Required Application Documents

    Applicants are expected to prepare a complete application package that includes:

    • Completed application form.
    • Research proposal.
    • Academic transcripts and degree certificates.
    • Recommendation letter.
    • Acceptance letter from a Japanese host institution.
    • Language proficiency certificate.
    • Any additional documents specified in the Application Guide.

    Incomplete applications or submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.

    Selection Process

    Applications will undergo a competitive evaluation by a Selection Committee composed of experts from UNESCO and the Government of Japan.

    The committee will assess:

    • Originality of the proposed project.
    • Relevance to UNESCO’s priority areas.
