    The United Nations University Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT) has announced applications for the AI Research for Better Policy training programme, a one-week intensive learning opportunity designed to equip PhD students, early-career researchers and working professionals with practical knowledge on applying artificial intelligence (AI) to research and policy development.

    The programme will take place from 18 to 22 January 2027 at UNU-MERIT in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and UNU-EHS in Bonn, Germany. Applications are open until 1 October 2026.

    The training programme aims to strengthen participants’ understanding of artificial intelligence, digital transformation and their applications in public policy, sustainable development and research.

    About the AI Research for Better Policy Programme

    The AI Research for Better Policy programme is a collaborative initiative developed by three United Nations University institutes:

    • UNU-MACAU, focusing on digitalisation and artificial intelligence expertise.

    • UNU-MERIT, specialising in public policy, innovation and development research.

    • UNU-EHS, focusing on climate change, sustainability and environmental challenges.

    The programme provides a multidisciplinary learning experience combining lectures, interactive discussions, practical exercises and collaborative research activities.

    Participants will explore how artificial intelligence can support evidence-based policymaking, improve research methodologies and contribute to addressing global development challenges.

    Programme Objectives and Learning Outcomes

    The training is designed to develop participants’ strategic vision, research capabilities and leadership potential in the use of AI for sustainable development.

    By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

    • Understand how digitalisation and artificial intelligence are transforming societies.

    • Apply fundamental AI concepts and tools in research and professional settings.

    • Connect AI and digital transformation with public policy and development challenges.

    • Understand the relationship between artificial intelligence and climate change research.

    • Collaborate with peers to develop solutions for global challenges.

    • Present research-based group projects with guidance from UNU researchers and experts.

    The programme is particularly relevant for professionals and researchers interested in artificial intelligence, digital innovation, sustainability, research and public policy.

    Programme Structure and Learning Experience

    The programme will begin on Monday, 18 January 2027, at UNU-MERIT in Maastricht, where participants will explore the foundations of artificial intelligence for research and public policy applications.

    The sessions will cover:

    • AI fundamentals and research applications.

    • Digital transformation and societal change.

    • The role of AI in policy development.

    On 20 January 2027, participants will travel by bus from Maastricht to Bonn, Germany, where learning sessions will be hosted at UNU-EHS.

    The Bonn sessions will focus on AI applications in climate-related research, including:

    • Climate adaptation.

    • Disaster risk management.

    • Sustainability challenges.

    The programme will conclude on 22 January 2027 with a collaborative group activity bringing together key lessons from the training. Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive a certificate validated by the three participating UNU institutes.

    Eligibility Requirements

    The programme is open to applicants from around the world, including:

    • PhD students.

    • Early-career researchers.

    • Working professionals.

    Applicants with interests in artificial intelligence, digitalisation, sustainability, research and public policy are encouraged to apply.

    Eligible applicants must submit:

    • Completed enrolment application form.

    • Copy of a valid passport or national identification document.

    • Updated curriculum vitae (CV).

    • Passport-size photograph.

    • Proof of current enrolment or completion of a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

    • Proof of English language proficiency equivalent to a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.

    Application Deadline and Fees

    The application deadline for the AI Research for Better Policy programme is 1 October 2026.

    The programme tuition fee is €1,250 per participant. Applicants who submit their applications before 1 August 2026 qualify for an early bird discounted fee of €1,100.

    The programme fee includes:

    • Registration for the training programme.

    • Access to learning materials, software and relevant resources.

    • Training sessions in Maastricht and Bonn.

    • Bus transportation between Maastricht and Bonn.

    • Certificate of completion.

    The fee does not cover:

    • Visa expenses.

    • Travel costs to and from Maastricht.

    • Accommodation expenses.

    • Meals.

    • Health and travel insurance.

    UNU institutions have confirmed that scholarships are not available for this programme.
