The University of Bergen (UiB) in Norway has announced an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Economics at its Department of Economics. The full-time, fixed-term position is designed for an early-career economist seeking to strengthen their research profile, contribute to teaching, and develop toward a future academic career.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Department’s existing research and education activities.

Key responsibilities will include:

Conducting an independent research project in economics
Publishing research in international peer-reviewed journals
Contributing actively to the Department’s research environment
Teaching and supervising students at bachelor’s and master’s levels
Participating in other academic and administrative activities
Developing a qualifying research project during the appointment

The normal teaching commitment is one course per year.

Research and Academic Expectations

The position is intended primarily to provide an opportunity for academic qualification and progression toward top-level academic positions.

Candidates are therefore expected to demonstrate strong research potential and an established academic background in economics.

Particular consideration will be given to documented research quality and publication potential. Evidence may include:

Publications in reputable international peer-reviewed journals
Research papers with revise-and-resubmit decisions
Completed article drafts with strong publication potential
A strong and coherent research agenda
Evidence of independent research capability

The successful applicant will also be expected to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative academic environment.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in economics.

Candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis for assessment before the application deadline may also apply. However, the PhD must have been formally awarded before the employment commencement date.

Strong written and verbal communication skills
The ability to work independently and systematically
The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues

Proficiency in Norwegian and/or English, both written and spoken, is required. Knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is considered an advantage.

Location and Working Arrangements

The position is based at the University of Bergen in Bergen, Norway.

The successful candidate will be required to live and work in Bergen and maintain regular physical presence at the Department.

Candidates may be invited to participate in an interview and could also be required to deliver a trial lecture on a specified topic as part of the recruitment process.

Four-Year Postdoctoral Appointment

The position is a fixed-term appointment lasting four years.

Of the total appointment, 25% is allocated to career development work at the Department. The primary purpose of the postdoctoral fellowship is to enable the successful candidate to develop the qualifications required for future academic positions.

Upon appointment, the fellow must submit a research project proposal and work schedule for the qualifying work. The project must be completed during the employment period.

The position carries a gross annual salary of approximately NOK 685,900 under salary code 1352 for postdoctoral research fellows. Higher remuneration may be considered for exceptionally well-qualified candidates, while further salary increases may depend on seniority.
