Overview

The Women in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) Doctoral Fellowship supports outstanding women PhD candidates integrating AI/ML methodologies within social sciences or related fields, providing financial support, mentorship, technical collaboration, and global visibility.

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to women who:

• Are currently enrolled in or admitted to a PhD program at an accredited institution in Sub‑Saharan Africa.
• Conduct research in any social science or related discipline, such as:
  • Computer science
  • Engineering
  • Economics
  • Public health
  • Environmental science
  • Sociology
  • Demography
  • Development studies
• Demonstrate intention to integrate AI/ML methodologies in their doctoral research.
• Are willing to participate actively in the KAIA Network community.

Benefits

Fellows will receive:

• Research Funding: A one-time grant of USD 5,000 for tuition, computing resources, data acquisition, mentorship support, or research-related travel.
• Technical Collaboration: Structured technical support, including pairing with an AI/ML collaborator, access to a community of researchers, and capacity-building resources.
• Professional Development: Membership in a global community, opportunities to present research, and networking with partners like UN agencies and universities.
• Knowledge Dissemination: Requirement to produce at least one open-access research output and share findings via KAIA-hosted seminars.
