The World Bank Group (WBG) has officially launched applications for the 2027 Africa Fellowship Program, inviting outstanding PhD candidates and recent PhD graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa to apply for a prestigious six-month fellowship designed to develop the next generation of African development professionals and researchers.
Announced on 15 July 2026, the fellowship offers selected participants the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the World Bank Group’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., or one of its country offices. The programme aims to strengthen Africa’s research and policymaking capacity while contributing to sustainable development, poverty reduction, and shared prosperity across the continent.
The World Bank Group has also encouraged women researchers to submit applications.
The Africa Fellowship Program targets highly talented young African scholars who are either completing their doctoral studies or have recently earned a PhD in disciplines relevant to the World Bank’s work.
Since its inception, the fellowship has helped build a strong pipeline of African professionals pursuing careers in:
Through practical work experience and professional mentorship, fellows contribute directly to projects that support economic growth, institutional development, and poverty reduction across developing countries.
Successful applicants will undertake a six-month professional assignment beginning in January 2027.

Phase One
Applicants will first undergo an initial review, after which shortlisted candidates will be matched with relevant World Bank Group units according to their academic expertise and specialization.

Phase Two
The final selection of fellows will be conducted in consultation with the participating World Bank Group departments.
