The global energy transition is not just being shaped by governments and corporations—it is increasingly driven by the creativity, innovation, and determination of young people. Recognizing this powerful force, the International Energy Agency (IEA), in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada, has officially launched the Youth Energy Efficiency Leadership Award 2026—a prestigious global competition designed to spotlight and support youth-led initiatives advancing energy efficiency worldwide.
This initiative is more than just an award—it is a platform for visibility, networking, and global recognition. Winners will be fully sponsored to attend the 11th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency, one of the most influential international gatherings on energy policy and innovation, held in Montreal, Canada.
Energy efficiency has become a cornerstone of sustainable development and climate action. As countries strive to reduce emissions and optimize energy consumption, young innovators are stepping forward with localized, scalable, and impactful solutions.
This award recognizes those efforts by giving youth leaders the opportunity to:
The competition emphasizes people-centered approaches, ensuring that solutions are inclusive, practical, and responsive to real societal needs.
The competition is intentionally inclusive and flexible, welcoming projects at various stages—from early ideas to fully operational programs. Whether you are an individual innovator, part of an informal group, or representing an organization, your project can qualify if it demonstrates tangible or potential impact.
Examples of eligible initiatives include:
What truly matters is your project’s real-world relevance and ability to address local challenges effectively.
Applications will be evaluated by an expert selection committee based on four key pillars:
Your project must clearly identify a meaningful energy efficiency challenge and explain its importance within a local or community context.
A strong application will present a clear and feasible plan, detailing the tools, activities, and steps used to achieve the project’s goals.
Applicants should demonstrate either measurable results or strong potential for positive outcomes—whether social, economic, behavioral, or technological.
Projects should reflect an understanding of local realities and show adaptability to community needs and feedback.
Up to five outstanding youth leaders will be selected to receive:
The conference itself brings together ministers, CEOs, and top experts, making it a unique space to influence and learn from global energy strategies.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit early and ensure all materials clearly address the evaluation criteria.
To be eligible, applicants must:
Importantly, participation is completely free of charge, making this opportunity accessible to youth from diverse backgrounds.
The organizers strongly encourage applications from:
This reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that global energy solutions are shaped by diverse voices and perspectives.
Participants retain full ownership of their submitted materials. However, selected projects may be showcased by the organizers with proper attribution.
All personal data collected during the application process will be securely stored and used strictly for evaluation, communication, and logistical arrangements, in compliance with international data protection standards.
Interested applicants should prepare a compelling submission that clearly outlines their project’s purpose, methodology, and impact. Applications are submitted through the official IEA channels.
