    Job Overview

    The Chief Climate Officer at UNOPS will spearhead the organization’s climate action strategy, driving emissions reduction, sustainable operations, and climate-resilient projects worldwide.

    This senior leadership role involves strategic planning, partnership development, and operational oversight to translate UNOPS’ climate commitments into tangible impact across its global portfolio.

    The incumbent will lead a dedicated team of eight climate professionals and work closely with senior leadership to embed climate considerations into organizational practices.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic Leadership and Policy Development

    • Drive the UNOPS Climate Action Programme (CAP) and align it with the Strategic Plan 2026–2029
    • Provide strategic advice on climate policies and oversee performance and risk management
    • Foster senior leadership ownership and integrate climate action into corporate planning

    Climate Action Programme Implementation

    • Lead initiatives to reduce internal emissions, including operational and supply chain emissions
    • Support the integration of climate resilience into project development and infrastructure standards
    • Ensure UNOPS achieves climate neutrality, managing Scope 1–3 emissions with data-driven accountability

    People and Team Leadership

    • Build and lead a diverse, high-performing climate team
    • Promote a culture of trust, empowerment, and accountability
    • Ensure adherence to UNOPS standards on conduct, inclusion, and protection

    Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships

    • Represent UNOPS in global climate forums and inter-agency initiatives
    • Strengthen partnerships with governments, climate funds, and development agencies
    • Lead UNOPS’ engagement with UN climate reporting and compliance processes

    Knowledge Management and Innovation

    • Monitor global climate policy trends and emerging risks and opportunities
    • Share best practices and foster innovation in climate solutions
    • Support capacity-building across UNOPS and its partners

    Required Skills and Competencies

    • Strategic thinking, organizational leadership, and stakeholder management
    • Expertise in carbon management, climate change, and risk mitigation
    • Strong collaboration, partnership-building, and communication skills
    • Adaptability and decision-making ability in fast-paced environments

    Education & Experience

    Educational Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Climate Change, Economics, or related discipline with 12+ years of relevant experience OR
    • Master’s degree in relevant fields with 10+ years of experience

    Professional Experience

    • Demonstrated expertise in climate science, international climate policy, and intergovernmental climate agreements
    • Experience working within the UN system or in multicultural, developing country contexts preferred
    • Leadership experience in change management and development or humanitarian sectors advantageous

    Language Requirements

    • Fluent in English (mandatory)
