Environmental professionals and climate advocates have a new opportunity to support community-driven climate action as the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) announces recruitment for a Project Coordinator position focused on climate and energy justice.
The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) is seeking a passionate and experienced Project Coordinator – Climate & Energy Justice Programme (ECO-JET) to support the implementation of climate justice initiatives across South Africa.
Based in Cape Town, the role will involve travel primarily to Mpumalanga and Limpopo, where the successful candidate will work with communities, faith-based organisations, civil society partners, and stakeholders involved in South Africa’s Just Energy Transition (JET).
SAFCEI, a leading multi-faith environmental justice organisation in Southern Africa, works with faith leaders, green champions, and communities to promote eco-justice, sustainable living, and climate action. Through the ECO-JET programme, the organisation aims to strengthen community participation in climate and energy decision-making, with a particular focus on empowering women and young people.
The appointed Project Coordinator will support the Project Manager in managing daily project implementation, partner communication, documentation, action tracking, community engagement, and advocacy activities.
The position combines project coordination with climate policy monitoring and grassroots advocacy. The successful applicant will help ensure that communities affected by energy transitions have meaningful opportunities to participate in shaping South Africa’s climate and energy future.
Key responsibilities will include coordinating project work plans, timelines, implementation activities, and reporting processes. The coordinator will also support the rollout of Solar Hub pilot projects alongside project partners and local communities.
The role will require monitoring developments in South Africa’s climate and energy policy landscape, including the country’s Just Energy Transition plans. The successful candidate will help translate complex policy issues into accessible learning materials, training resources, and community education tools.

SAFCEI is looking for candidates with strong experience in climate policy, energy justice, advocacy, or community development.
Applicants should have a degree in Environmental Policy, Political Science, Development Studies, or a related field, together with at least five years of professional experience in relevant areas.

SAFCEI is also seeking candidates with excellent communication, writing, networking, and organisational skills. A valid South African driver’s licence is required due to the travel responsibilities associated with the role.
The ECO-JET Project Coordinator will play an important role in supporting communities as South Africa navigates its transition toward cleaner energy systems. The position offers an opportunity for an experienced climate professional to contribute to policy discussions, strengthen community voices, and support practical climate solutions.
