Dublin City University (DCU) has announced an exciting short-term full-time opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join the innovative BRESING Project, a cutting-edge research initiative focused on developing a non-invasive glucose monitoring system for people living with diabetes.
The project, officially titled Breath Sensing for Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring (BRESING), is exploring the potential of using breath analysis technology as an alternative to traditional blood sugar testing methods.
The study aims to improve the future of diabetes management by reducing the need for invasive finger-prick testing and enhancing patient comfort.
Based at DCU’s Glasnevin campus in Dublin, the successful applicant will support participant testing over a one-month research period beginning in July 2026.
The BRESING Project represents a major advancement in health technology research and medical innovation. Researchers are investigating whether breath samples can provide accurate glucose monitoring data comparable to traditional blood glucose tests.
The study will involve approximately 100 participants, with each testing appointment lasting around 30 minutes. During these sessions, researchers will compare breath sample data with reference blood glucose measurements to evaluate the effectiveness of the non-invasive system.
Unlike conventional glucose monitoring methods that rely on repeated skin punctures, the breathalyzer-style device being explored in the BRESING project could eventually offer a more comfortable and accessible solution for diabetes patients worldwide.
The research also reflects growing global interest in wearable and non-invasive healthcare technologies aimed at improving patient experiences and long-term health outcomes.
DCU is seeking a qualified and compassionate Registered Nurse to support the day-to-day clinical operations of the study. The selected candidate will work closely with the research team to ensure testing procedures are carried out safely, professionally, and ethically.
The nurse will be responsible for several important tasks throughout the study period, including:
The role combines clinical nursing responsibilities with research support duties, making it particularly attractive for professionals interested in healthcare innovation and clinical research environments.
Participant wellbeing forms a key component of the BRESING study, and DCU has highlighted the importance of communication, professionalism, and compassion within the role.
The successful nurse will help create a welcoming and supportive environment where participants feel safe, informed, and respected throughout the research process.
Responsibilities linked to participant care include:
The university noted that strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse participants are essential for the position.
Applicants interested in the role must meet several key eligibility requirements. DCU is specifically looking for candidates who demonstrate both technical competence and excellent participant-care skills.
Essential requirements include:
The university is encouraging applications from nurses with an interest in medical research, healthcare technology, and patient-focused innovation.
The role is being offered as a short-term full-time contract aligned with the duration of the research study.
Contract details include:
Because participant appointments will be arranged according to availability and glucose monitoring schedules, some flexibility in working hours may be required during the study period.
The BRESING project provides a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals to contribute directly to pioneering research that could transform diabetes management in the years ahead.
Non-invasive monitoring technologies continue to attract growing interest within global healthcare systems due to their potential to improve patient compliance, reduce discomfort, and support long-term disease management.
By participating in this project, the successful candidate will gain valuable experience in clinical research while supporting the development of potentially life-changing healthcare technology.
