Eligibility Criteria for 2026 Fellowship Applicants

VUT has outlined strict eligibility requirements for prospective applicants.

To qualify, candidates must:

Have obtained a PhD degree from 2021 onwards
Not hold a full-time permanent academic or research position
Be available for full-time residential research at VUT
Spend at least 80% of their time on campus or near the institution
Demonstrate strong academic and research potential

Although the programme is open to international applicants, preference will be given to South African citizens and permanent residents.

Applicants who obtained qualifications outside South Africa must submit proof of evaluation and verification through the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

The university emphasized that the fellowship is designed primarily for early-career researchers who are still establishing themselves academically.

Assisting with postgraduate student supervision

Important Conditions Applicants Must Understand

VUT has clarified that the fellowship is research-focused and not classified as salaried employment.

As a result, successful applicants:

May not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship period
Will be permitted to undertake a maximum of 12 hours of teaching-related work per week
Must comply with all university research policies and procedures
Will be required to sign an official fellowship agreement with the university

The institution also highlighted the importance of departmental support, including access to office space, laboratories, research facilities, and mentorship.
