Release Engineer - Data Plane Internal Tooling and Productivity @ClickHouse

Overview

The Release Team at ClickHouse is responsible for the safe, continuous delivery of ClickHouse Cloud, a managed database platform. The team manages upgrades and maintenance of numerous ClickHouse clusters and develops internal tooling for operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and execute rolling upgrades across tens of thousands of ClickHouse clusters, ensuring safety, correctness, and minimal customer impact.
• Own the full release pipeline: from pre-upgrade validation and staged rollouts to post-upgrade monitoring and incident response.
• Investigate and resolve production issues as part of a regular on-call rotation, including handling edge cases that automation cannot address.
• Build and improve the internal tooling and automation to ensure reliable and repeatable large-scale database operations.
• Collaborate with the core database and cloud infrastructure teams to identify operational pain points and develop solutions.
• Support and educate other engineering teams on the use of internal tools.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience operating stateful distributed systems in production, such as databases or storage systems.
• Hands-on experience in running upgrades or maintenance operations on live production data stores at scale.
• Strong debugging skills, comfortable resolving issues in unfamiliar systems under pressure.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and Kubernetes.
• Software development experience in Go or another programming language, with a willingness to learn Go.
• Experience with ClickHouse preferred, either as a user, operator, or contributor.
