The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic Research Assistant at the Animal Production (ARC-AP) department in Irene, Gauteng.

This role involves routine chemical analysis, reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, and ensuring compliance with quality standards, including ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Analysis and Sample Handling

Assist with routine analysis of chemical nature
Prepare reagents and chemicals for analysis
Assist with sample reception and calibration standards mixing

Equipment and Facility Maintenance

Clean utensils and glassware used for analytical determination
Report and troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment
Maintain laboratory cleanliness and equipment in accordance with quality standards

Quality and Safety Compliance

Apply techniques within specified guidelines
Maintain occupational health and safety standards
Support accreditation status and compliance with ISO standards

Administrative and Stock Control Tasks

Plan and schedule analytical services efficiently
Control stock in a cost-effective manner
Maintain accurate reporting and documentation

Requirements

Grade 12 with 3 years relevant experience or a National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (advantageous)
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Ability to maintain confidentiality
Experience with ISO 17025 and accredited laboratories (advantageous)
Proficiency in MS Office Suite (advantageous)
Valid South African driver’s license (advantageous)

Remuneration: Competitive, aligned with responsibilities and position stature
Selection: Subject to security clearance; preference given to designated groups under ARC’s Employment Equity Plan
Probation: Six months for permanent appointments
