Experts say research examining platform governance and digital power structures has become one of the fastest-growing areas within communication studies, political science, and digital policy research. As major technology companies increasingly influence public discourse, elections, privacy rights, and information systems, universities and policymakers are investing heavily in research focused on accountability and governance.
The rise of generative artificial intelligence, online misinformation, and content moderation disputes has intensified global debates around the role of companies such as Google, Meta, TikTok, and X in shaping democratic processes and digital societies.
Key trends driving platform governance research include:
Analysts note that interdisciplinary projects like “Power over Platforms?” are becoming increasingly valuable because they combine communication studies, political science, law, and digital sociology to understand how global technology governance is evolving in real time.
Interested researchers are encouraged to submit their applications before the official closing date of 2 August 2026 at 23:59 CEST.
