London, United Kingdom – June 2026 — The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has announced a new vacancy for a Research Assistant (Industrial Strategy) within its newly established Global School of Sustainability (GSoS), marking a significant addition to its interdisciplinary research capacity in sustainable development and clean technology innovation.
The position is offered on a fixed-term one-year contract and forms part of a broader research initiative focused on informing industrial strategies that support sustainable economic growth through clean technology development and innovation policy.
The Global School of Sustainability at LSE is positioned as a major interdisciplinary hub dedicated to advancing research with real-world impact on climate change, sustainability transitions, and economic transformation.
The new research assistant role will contribute directly to this agenda through data-driven analysis and applied economic research.
The research project supporting the role is designed to generate cutting-edge evidence on clean technology innovation and its implications for industrial strategy. The findings are expected to inform policymakers and contribute to broader debates on how economies can transition toward low-carbon, sustainable growth models.
The project is led by Professor Anna Valero, Professor in Practice at the Global School of Sustainability and affiliated with the LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance. Under her leadership, the research will examine how innovation systems, technological change, and policy frameworks interact to shape industrial competitiveness and environmental outcomes.
The Research Assistant will support empirical research activities, particularly those involving large-scale datasets and quantitative analysis. The role is expected to contribute to the production of high-quality academic outputs, policy-relevant research, and data-driven insights into industrial transformation and sustainability.
The position requires strong technical capabilities, particularly in econometric and statistical analysis. Advanced proficiency in Stata and experience working with large-scale microdata sets are considered essential for the role.
Candidates will be expected to contribute to the design, execution, and interpretation of quantitative research, supporting broader project goals related to innovation economics and sustainability policy.
Applicants must hold at least an undergraduate degree in Economics or a closely related quantitative social science discipline. Degrees from fields with a strong emphasis on data analysis for social science research will also be considered relevant.
While not mandatory at the time of application, a Master’s degree in Economics or a related quantitative discipline is highly desirable and should ideally be completed by the start date of employment. A strong foundation in economic theory is also expected.
In addition to academic qualifications, candidates must demonstrate advanced experience in:
Beyond technical expertise, the role also requires a demonstrated interest in environmental sustainability, innovation economics, and industrial policy. The project is situated at the intersection of climate change, technological transformation, and economic growth strategy, and seeks candidates who are motivated by these thematic areas.
Knowledge of how governments design and implement industrial strategies for sustainable development will be considered an advantage, particularly where it relates to clean technology adoption and economic transition pathways.
The establishment of the Global School of Sustainability reflects LSE’s growing emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to addressing global environmental and economic challenges. The Research Assistant role is part of this wider institutional effort to generate rigorous evidence that can inform both academic debate and real-world policy decisions.
By supporting research on clean technology innovation and industrial strategy, the successful candidate will contribute to a field that is increasingly central to global climate and economic policy discussions.
Interested candidates are advised that the closing date for applications is Wednesday, 1 July 2026. Further information regarding application procedures and submission requirements is available through LSE’s official recruitment channels.
The role offers an opportunity for early-career researchers with strong quantitative skills and an interest in sustainability to contribute to one of the world’s leading academic institutions working at the intersection of economics, innovation, and climate policy.
