Nutrition International (NI) is recruiting for the position of Safeguarding Officer to support its Child Survival Program in Abuja, Nigeria.

Job Summary
The Safeguarding Officer will lead the implementation of safeguarding policies across program activities, ensuring protection of children, vulnerable adults, staff, and partners from harm, abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
This role focuses on risk management, compliance, reporting, training, and survivor-centered response, ensuring all operations align with global safeguarding standards.
Key Responsibilities
Safeguarding & Risk Management
- Conduct safeguarding risk assessments across all program activities
- Develop and track mitigation plans and safeguarding action registers
- Integrate safeguarding into program design, budgets, and MEAL frameworks
- Ensure safe participation of children and communities
Partner Compliance & Capacity Building
- Assess safeguarding capacity of partners and monitor improvement plans
- Ensure vendors, consultants, and partners comply with safeguarding policies
- Embed safeguarding into onboarding, procurement, and field operations
Reporting, Response & Survivor Support
- Serve as a confidential reporting channel for safeguarding concerns
- Document and escalate cases within 24 hours per policy
- Maintain referral pathways (medical, legal, psychosocial support)
- Support case management and survivor-centered interventions
Training & Awareness
- Deliver safeguarding trainings, inductions, and awareness sessions
- Ensure communities understand their rights and reporting mechanisms
- Maintain safeguarding records and compliance documentation
External Representation
- Represent NI in safeguarding and child protection forums
- Liaise with government and protection agencies
- Contribute to safeguarding best practices and learning
Requirements
Education
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Sociology, Law, Gender Studies, Community Development, or related field
Experience
- Minimum of 4 years experience in safeguarding, PSEAH, child protection, or GBV programming
- Experience working with international NGOs preferred
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of safeguarding principles (Do No Harm, confidentiality, survivor-centered care)
- Experience in risk assessments, training, and partner capacity building
- Familiarity with Nigeria’s child protection and social welfare systems
Other Skills
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- High level of integrity, discretion, and cultural sensitivity
- Strong coordination, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement abilities
Language
- Fluent in English (written and spoken)
- Knowledge of Hausa or other local languages is an advantage
