Job Summary
The Safety & Security Officer will provide security risk analysis, operational guidance, and incident response support to ensure safe program implementation across northern Nigeria.
The role involves monitoring the operating environment, advising on staff movement, strengthening security systems, and supporting emergency preparedness in complex and high-risk settings.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Analysis & Context Monitoring
- Monitor security trends across Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina
- Conduct threat assessments and provide actionable recommendations
- Maintain incident databases and produce regular security reports
Security Planning & Documentation
- Develop and update security plans, SOPs, and contingency procedures
- Support site and facility security assessments
- Ensure proper documentation and compliance with security frameworks
Operational Support & Movement Advisory
- Provide guidance on safe staff and consultant movements
- Monitor road conditions, risks, and access constraints
- Conduct field security assessments and audits
Incident Management & Emergency Response
- Support response to security incidents and emergencies
- Ensure timely reporting, documentation, and follow-up actions
- Contribute to contingency planning (evacuation, relocation, lockdown)
Training & Awareness
- Deliver security briefings and staff inductions
- Promote situational awareness and personal security practices
Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with government agencies, security actors, and coordination forums
- Maintain relationships with partners and community stakeholders
- Provide insights into local dynamics affecting operations
Compliance & Oversight
- Monitor adherence to safety and security policies
- Support audits and follow up on risk mitigation actions
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Security, Humanitarian Studies, Development, or related field
(or 4+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree)
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years experience in security risk management or advisory roles
- Experience in fragile or conflict-affected environments
- Previous work with NGOs or international organizations preferred
Technical Skills
- Strong expertise in security risk assessments and incident response
- Experience with movement planning and access coordination
- Ability to analyze conflict and security dynamics in northern Nigeria
- Skilled in drafting security plans, SOPs, and reports
Other Skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Strong stakeholder engagement and coordination ability
- High level of integrity, resilience, and cultural sensitivity
Language
- Fluent in English (written and spoken)
- Knowledge of Hausa or local languages is an advantage
Working Conditions
- Regular travel across northern Nigeria, including high-risk areas
