The Biodiversity Footprint Company (TBFC) is seeking an experienced ecologist with strong GIS and spatial-analysis skills to join our small, specialist consultancy.

Job Title: Biodiversity Footprint Analyst
Location: Remote (South Africa-based applicants only)

Contract: Permanent, full-time (40 hours/week) with flexible hours

The role involves assessing and disclosing the biodiversity footprints of global businesses, utilizing the Biological Diversity Protocol and best-practice approaches.

The successful candidate will analyze ecological, geospatial, remotely sensed, and field-derived data, contribute to ecosystem condition assessments, and produce clear, technical reports and maps.

This is a fully remote, permanent position suitable for a methodical and curious applied scientist motivated by credible biodiversity measurement to address global biodiversity loss.

Core Responsibilities

• Analyze ecological, geospatial, remotely sensed, and field data to produce ecosystem condition maps using QGIS/ArcGIS
• Apply ecological-condition classification and scoring methods across multiple global sites

• Interpret ecosystem and species data, translating findings into defensible conclusions
• Draft methodologies, results, and supporting documentation for clients, research, and internal use

• Prepare high-quality maps, visualizations, and spatial outputs
• Manage tasks using project-management systems, track progress, incorporate feedback, and communicate risks early

• Conduct quality assurance of data, maps, analyses, and written reports before submission
• Clearly communicate technical findings to colleagues, clients, and stakeholders

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

• MSc or PhD in ecology, landscape ecology, conservation science, GIS, remote sensing, or related field
• 3-5+ years of relevant professional or applied research experience
• Strong GIS skills including spatial data management, analysis, and map-making

• Experience interpreting remotely sensed and environmental monitoring data
• Knowledge of ecological theory, ecosystem processes, and biodiversity components
• Excellent analytical, technical writing, and scientific interpretation skills

• Proven ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines
• Rigorous quality assurance practices
• Fluent in English with the discipline to work independently

Advantageous Skills:

• Experience with Google Earth Engine, R, Python, or similar tools
• Consulting experience with client-ready outputs
• Experience in proposal writing, research publications, or external communication
