    Overview

    The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is offering a six-month internship focused on traditional knowledge and engagement with indigenous peoples and local communities, contributing to global biodiversity policy ahead of COP17. This internship can be based in Montreal, Canada, or undertaken remotely.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conducting research on biodiversity, indigenous peoples, and traditional knowledge
    • Drafting background documents and meeting materials
    • Supporting coordination with stakeholders and indigenous representatives
    • Assisting in preparations for COP17 discussions
    • Contributing to engagement processes linked to the Nature and Culture Summit

    Requirements

    • Currently enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or PhD program, or be in the final year/recently completed a Bachelor’s degree.
    • Academic background in environmental studies, indigenous studies, law, public policy, or related disciplines.
    • Strong analytical and writing skills.
    • Knowledge of indigenous peoples, traditional knowledge, or biodiversity governance.
    • Computer literacy in standard software tools.
    • Interest in multilateral environmental processes and ability to work across diverse cultural contexts.
    • Alignment with the values of the United Nations.
    • Fluency in English (oral and written). Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an asset.

    Benefits

    This is an unpaid internship. Interns are responsible for travel arrangements, visa costs, accommodation, and living expenses.
