Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative is hiring: Africa Communications Consultant
The Africa Communications Consultant, reporting to the Communications Director, will play a vital role in scaling communications for a Fossil Fuel Treaty across Africa.
Job Title: Africa Communications Consultant
Location: Remote in Africa with some travel to participate in events/meeting(s) in-person

Contract: Part-time, Consultancy (July 2026 – June 2027)
Compensation: $2000 – $2500 USD per month, depending on experience, location, and agreed working hours
This includes social media, partner engagement, and strategic communication efforts.
The role involves working closely with the Public Engagement team and the Africa Regional Director to support diplomatic engagement, strengthen networks, and mobilize support for the Treaty among African nations and civil society.
The position offers an exciting chance to contribute to a bold global campaign advocating for a fossil fuel-free future.
Key Responsibilities
Communications Strategy and Content Development
- Support public communications demonstrating growing support for the Fossil Fuel Treaty in Africa
- Create and distribute press releases, communication packs, email campaigns, website content, talking points, briefing papers, social media content (including graphics in Canva), and more
Media Engagement and Campaign Coordination
- Coordinate traditional and digital media around regional and national moments in Africa
- Develop and implement impactful regional communication strategies targeting specific countries
- Build relationships with print, broadcast, and online journalists across Africa
Network Activation and Partnership Building
- Maintain relationships with African partners, champions, and high-profile individuals to amplify campaign messaging
- Foster engagement with civil society, youth, Indigenous communities, faith groups, and other constituencies supporting the Treaty
Monitoring and Reporting
- Track and report on regional media coverage and campaign metrics
- Support strategic planning based on digital insights and media analysis
Required Experience & Attributes
- Minimum of five years of professional communications campaigning experience in Africa
- Proven experience in social media, digital content production, and media relations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Ability to work swiftly, creatively solve problems, and multitask effectively
- Strong commitment to working across cultures with a decolonial perspective
Desired Experience & Attributes
- Event management experience
- Background working with climate-focused NGOs
- Relationships with influencers for content collaboration
- Skills in graphic design, video production, and content creation (using Canva preferred)
- Experience working with remote, global teams across multiple time zones
- Fluency in French is highly desirable
