Job Summary

The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) seeks a Data Scientist to analyze energy and air pollution data remotely.

The role involves transforming complex datasets into policy-relevant insights, working closely with analysts and communication teams.

This hands-on position requires expertise in quantitative analysis, data integration, visualization, and investigative research to identify impactful findings on energy markets, fossil fuels, clean energy, and air pollution.

Key Responsibilities

Rapid Quantitative Analysis

• Conduct fast-paced analyses in response to pollution episodes, energy market shifts, and policy events.
• Identify impactful, policy-relevant findings to inform decision-makers.

Data Management and Analysis

• Integrate, clean, and analyze diverse proprietary, open, and in-house datasets.
• Develop reproducible code and robust methodology documentation.
• Create effective data visualizations for technical and non-technical audiences.

Research Support and Development

• Combine quantitative analysis with domain expertise and desk research.
• Develop new datasets, analytical tools, and data products to enhance CREA’s research capabilities.
• Collaborate with colleagues to shape research questions and identify key insights.

Reporting and Communication

• Contribute to reports, briefings, and research outputs ensuring transparency and robustness.
• Support the dissemination of findings through media-ready analysis, relationship-building with journalists, and rapid response tools.

Qualifications

Essential

• Higher education or equivalent professional experience in data science, economics, engineering, statistics, computer science, energy systems, or related discipline.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience analyzing large, complex datasets in research, consulting, public policy, or commercial environments.

• Proven ability to produce clear, accurate, reproducible, and well-documented analyses.
• Experience creating visualizations for diverse audiences.
• Strong programming skills in Python and/or R, with basic knowledge of version control (e.g., Git).
• Excellent written and spoken English skills.

Desirable

• Experience analyzing electricity markets, fossil fuel markets, energy systems, or environmental data.
• Familiarity with cloud-based data workflows.
• Understanding of energy, air quality, and climate policy contexts.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary and international teams.
