Early Career Academic Fellowship – AIMS Research and Innovation Centre

Are you a recent PhD graduate ready to take the next step in your academic career?

The AIMS Research and Innovation Centre is now recruiting five Early Career Academic Fellows (Tutorial Fellows) for its Mathematical Epidemiology Programme in Nairobi, Kenya.

This 18-month residential fellowship is designed to support outstanding early-career researchers from across Africa who are ready to transition into academic and research leadership roles in mathematical sciences, public health modelling, and computational epidemiology.

The application deadline is 19 July 2026.

    About the Fellowship

The Early Career Academic Fellowship offers a structured pathway for recent PhD graduates to build strong academic careers while contributing to one of Africa’s leading mathematical epidemiology programmes.

Fellows will work within a dynamic, pan-African research environment, collaborating with internationally recognised scientists while contributing to teaching and mentoring activities for Master’s students.

The programme is hosted at the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre in partnership with leading institutions including research and public health partners in Kenya. It is designed as a bridge between doctoral training and long-term academic or research careers, particularly in fields addressing infectious disease modelling, health systems, and quantitative analysis of public health challenges.

    Programme Structure

The fellowship follows an innovative 70:30 model:

    • 70% Teaching, mentoring, and academic engagement
    • 30% Dedicated research time

This structure ensures that fellows gain both hands-on academic experience and protected time to develop their independent research profiles.

    Fellows will contribute to:

    • Tutorials and computational laboratories
    • Student supervision and mentoring
    • Assessment and academic support
    • Curriculum delivery within the Mathematical Epidemiology Programme

At the same time, they will advance their own research projects, publish academic outputs, and develop long-term research agendas in mathematical epidemiology and related disciplines.

    What You Will Gain

    Academic Career Development

Fellows will develop core academic competencies including teaching, supervision, and mentoring. This experience strengthens career pathways into universities, research institutes, public health agencies, government institutions, and international organisations.

    Protected Research Time

The fellowship ensures dedicated time for research, with 30% of workload allocated to personal academic development, publication writing, and independent research progress.

    International Research Environment

Fellows join a vibrant pan-African academic network, working alongside experienced researchers, lecturers, and a diverse cohort of Master’s students from across the continent.

    Teaching and Mentorship Experience

Participants gain structured experience in academic instruction, including tutorials, laboratory sessions, student supervision, and assessment design within an internationally recognised programme.

    Professional Network Development

The fellowship offers access to a wide network of academic institutions, ministries of health, and international partners working at the intersection of mathematics, epidemiology, and public health policy.
