Are you a recent PhD graduate ready to take the next step in your academic career?
The AIMS Research and Innovation Centre is now recruiting five Early Career Academic Fellows (Tutorial Fellows) for its Mathematical Epidemiology Programme in Nairobi, Kenya.
This 18-month residential fellowship is designed to support outstanding early-career researchers from across Africa who are ready to transition into academic and research leadership roles in mathematical sciences, public health modelling, and computational epidemiology.
The application deadline is 19 July 2026.
The Early Career Academic Fellowship offers a structured pathway for recent PhD graduates to build strong academic careers while contributing to one of Africa’s leading mathematical epidemiology programmes.
Fellows will work within a dynamic, pan-African research environment, collaborating with internationally recognised scientists while contributing to teaching and mentoring activities for Master’s students.
The programme is hosted at the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre in partnership with leading institutions including research and public health partners in Kenya. It is designed as a bridge between doctoral training and long-term academic or research careers, particularly in fields addressing infectious disease modelling, health systems, and quantitative analysis of public health challenges.
The fellowship follows an innovative 70:30 model:
This structure ensures that fellows gain both hands-on academic experience and protected time to develop their independent research profiles.
Fellows will contribute to:
At the same time, they will advance their own research projects, publish academic outputs, and develop long-term research agendas in mathematical epidemiology and related disciplines.
Fellows will develop core academic competencies including teaching, supervision, and mentoring. This experience strengthens career pathways into universities, research institutes, public health agencies, government institutions, and international organisations.
The fellowship ensures dedicated time for research, with 30% of workload allocated to personal academic development, publication writing, and independent research progress.
Fellows join a vibrant pan-African academic network, working alongside experienced researchers, lecturers, and a diverse cohort of Master’s students from across the continent.
Participants gain structured experience in academic instruction, including tutorials, laboratory sessions, student supervision, and assessment design within an internationally recognised programme.
The fellowship offers access to a wide network of academic institutions, ministries of health, and international partners working at the intersection of mathematics, epidemiology, and public health policy.
Applicants must:
The programme is part of AIMS RIC’s broader mission to strengthen African capacity in mathematical sciences and support the next generation of researchers working on urgent global health challenges.
Mathematical epidemiology plays a critical role in understanding disease transmission, predicting outbreaks, and informing public health interventions. From infectious disease modelling to health systems optimisation, quantitative research is increasingly central to global health decision-making.
This fellowship is designed to ensure that early-career African researchers are not only contributors to this field but also leaders shaping its future direction.
By combining teaching experience, research development, and international collaboration, the programme strengthens both individual careers and institutional capacity across the continent.
Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications early and not wait until the deadline.
Applications must be submitted through the AIMS RIC application portal below.
Deadline: 19 July 2026
AIMS Research and Innovation Centre is an equal opportunity institution. Applications are encouraged from qualified candidates of all nationalities, genders, and backgrounds, particularly those from underrepresented groups in mathematical sciences and public health research. Selection is based strictly on merit.
