Head of AI and Machine Learning Engineering @Gusto

Overview

Gusto is on a mission to support the small business economy by providing services in payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR. They are looking for a Head of AI and Machine Learning Engineering to lead AI initiatives and improve customer experiences through AI and ML systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the AI and Machine Learning Engineering organization, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
• Define and execute Gusto’s AI/ML systems strategy, integrating classical ML, GenAI, and risk modeling.
• Collaborate with senior leaders to identify opportunities for AI/ML applications that add value to customers.
• Oversee the development of AI/ML platform capabilities and deployment patterns.
• Drive technical judgment around AI/ML investments and create space for experimentation.
• Set goals and KPIs to measure the performance and business impact of AI/ML systems.
• Keep abreast of advancements in AI/ML and apply relevant technologies.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in applied machine learning, AI, engineering, or data science.
• Deep technical expertise in AI/ML systems and production-scale deployment.
• Strong software engineering background.
• Experience leading high-performing technical teams.
• Strategic judgment in shaping AI/ML priorities and investments.
• Excellent executive communication skills.
• Experience in fintech or regulated environments is a plus.
• Advanced degree in relevant fields is a plus.

Benefits

Competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs). Cash compensation for this role ranges from $275,000-305,000 in Denver and most remote locations, and $320,000-350,000 for San Francisco and New York, depending on experience.

Location

This role can be remote, though Gusto has offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees in those locations are expected to work from the office 2-3 days per week.
