    About the Role

    The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a skilled Science Writer to join its dynamic communications team.

    This remote position involves translating groundbreaking research from Scripps scientists into engaging stories that inform and inspire a broad audience.

    The successful candidate will craft news releases, feature articles, and other materials, ensuring accurate, compelling, and accessible communication of scientific discoveries related to oceans, Earth, and atmosphere.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Research and write news releases and feature stories on scientific research and innovations at Scripps Oceanography
    • Conduct interviews with researchers and select credible sources to ensure accuracy
    • Edit and proofread content adhering to AP style and journalistic standards

    • Collaborate with the communications team to produce diverse written materials for media, campus channels, reports, and collateral
    • Translate complex scientific findings into lay-friendly language suitable for multiple audiences

    Ideal Candidate Profile

    • Proven experience in writing engaging, clear, and lively content in various styles for the public and media
    • Extensive knowledge of oceanography, geophysics, marine biology, and environmental sciences
    • Strong understanding of academic and scientific issues, with experience in research and fact verification

    • Familiarity with editorial standards, style guides, and publishing tools
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively
    • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills

    Qualifications and Requirements

    • Prior experience in science communication, particularly in ocean, earth, or atmospheric sciences
    • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality, accurate written content
