Nature Kenya has announced applications for seven Educational Promotion Officer positions under the Systematic Learning and Mainstreaming of Biodiversity Targets for Innovative Transformation and Behavioural Change (SYMBIOTIC) Project. The initiative seeks experienced environmental education and community engagement professionals to support biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihood programmes across Kenya.
The positions will be based at community eco-resource centres located in key conservation landscapes, including Dakatcha Woodland, Kakamega Forest, South Nandi Forest, Sabaki River Mouth, Kinangop Grasslands, Cherangany Hills, and Kikuyu Escarpment.
Successful candidates will begin work on July 1, 2026, under annual renewable contracts that may be extended for up to four years based on performance.
The SYMBIOTIC Project aims to strengthen biodiversity conservation efforts by promoting environmental awareness, stakeholder engagement, sustainable natural resource management, and climate resilience initiatives.
As part of the project, Nature Kenya has established community eco-resource centres designed to serve as environmental information hubs where communities, schools, youth groups, women’s organizations, and conservation stakeholders can access knowledge, training, and learning resources.
The Educational Promotion Officers will play a central role in operationalizing these centres and transforming them into active conservation learning hubs that support environmental stewardship and community action.
The Educational Promotion Officers will oversee environmental education programmes, stakeholder engagement activities, awareness campaigns, and knowledge management functions within their respective landscapes.
The officers will be responsible for the day-to-day management of eco-resource centres.
Core duties include:
• Managing resource centre operations and visitor services
• Establishing conservation information and documentation systems
• Maintaining environmental libraries and learning materials
• Coordinating stakeholder meetings and exhibitions
• Managing visitor databases and records
• Supporting resource centre management committees
• Ensuring centres remain accessible and responsive to community needs
The resource centres are expected to become focal points for environmental learning and conservation knowledge sharing.
A major component of the role involves designing and implementing environmental education programmes for communities and local stakeholders.
Responsibilities include:
• Coordinating environmental awareness campaigns
• Developing annual, quarterly, and monthly education work plans
• Producing educational materials and awareness products
• Facilitating community learning forums
• Supporting biodiversity conservation education
• Promoting ecosystem restoration initiatives
• Raising awareness about climate change adaptation
• Encouraging sustainable natural resource management practices
The officers will work closely with local institutions and community organizations to strengthen environmental stewardship.
Educational Promotion Officers will also support environmental education within schools.
Key activities include:
• Establishing and strengthening school environmental clubs
• Conducting environmental outreach sessions
• Supporting school tree-growing programmes
• Facilitating ecosystem restoration activities
• Organizing environmental competitions and debates
• Conducting awareness campaigns and exhibitions
• Coordinating educational visits to conservation sites
• Training teachers and environmental club patrons
• Promoting recycling and waste management initiatives
The programme aims to nurture a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens through school-based engagement.
The positions emphasize inclusive community participation in conservation efforts.
Successful candidates will:
• Organize community awareness forums
• Facilitate stakeholder dialogues
• Mobilize local participation in restoration activities
• Support Community Forest Associations (CFAs)
• Collaborate with churches and community groups
• Coordinate youth conservation volunteer programmes
• Promote environmental entrepreneurship initiatives
• Support women-led conservation activities
• Encourage participation of vulnerable and marginalized groups
This approach seeks to ensure that conservation efforts are community-driven and inclusive.
The Educational Promotion Officers will also contribute to project visibility, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
Responsibilities include:
• Documenting conservation success stories
• Producing environmental information products
• Supporting communication and visibility activities
• Managing outreach databases
• Coordinating awareness campaigns through media platforms
• Maintaining photographic and audiovisual records
• Developing newsletters and educational publications
Effective communication will play an important role in promoting environmental action and sharing lessons learned.
The officers will coordinate participation in major environmental observances and campaigns throughout the year.
These include:
• World Environment Day
• International Day for Biological Diversity
• International Day of Forests
• World Wetlands Day
• World Wildlife Day
• World Desertification and Drought Day
• Other local and international conservation events
These campaigns are expected to increase public awareness and strengthen stakeholder engagement around environmental issues.
The SYMBIOTIC Project has established clear performance indicators for the role.
Annual targets include:
• At least 500 resource centre visitors
• A minimum of 12 stakeholder learning events
• At least 12 community awareness forums
• Reaching more than 1,000 community members through awareness activities
• Supporting 20 schools and environmental clubs
• Conducting 30 school outreach sessions
• Engaging at least 100 youth volunteers
• Producing 12 documented success stories
• Implementing 12 environmental awareness campaigns
These indicators reflect the project’s focus on measurable conservation impact and community engagement.
Nature Kenya is seeking candidates with:
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Community Development, Communication, or a related field
• At least three years of experience in environmental education, conservation awareness, or community mobilization
• Experience working with schools, community organizations, and conservation stakeholders
• Strong communication and facilitation skills
• Excellent report writing abilities
• Experience in knowledge management and documentation
• Familiarity with local conservation challenges and landscapes
Candidates residing near the designated resource centres will have an added advantage.
