    Overview

    The role involves joining the Elasticsearch - Search team as a Principal Software Developer at Elastic, a company focused on providing scalable search solutions using AI.     Key Responsibilities

    • Lead initiatives to produce an industry-leading vector database offering with unmatched speed and relevance in search.
    • Build new search features and fix bugs in Elasticsearch, potentially inventing new algorithms or data structures.
    • Collaborate with a globally distributed team on vector search capabilities.
    • Serve as the expert on Elasticsearch's implementation of vector similarity and enhance it based on feedback and instincts.
    • Engage with community members on issues and pull requests, managing them as needed.
    • Write idiomatic modern Java, as the majority of Elasticsearch is developed in this language.

    Requirements

    • Experience with vector similarity on a search platform or in academic research.
    • Professional experience with vector similarity, vector databases, and relevant algorithms like HNSW or IVF.
    • Strong skills in core Java and familiarity with data structures and concurrency constructs.
    • Ability to guide projects from beginning to end autonomously, including technical design and component development.
    • Effective collaborative development skills, particularly in remote and asynchronous environments.
    • Familiarity with various data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Track record of using AI to accelerate development and optimize complex systems.
    • Experience transitioning between different projects and teams based on business needs.
