Overview

The role involves joining Gusto as a Principal Software Engineer focusing on core platform capabilities for Payroll and Tax systems. Gusto aims to support small businesses by simplifying payroll, health insurance, and HR processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Function as a Technical Lead across multiple teams in Payroll Services, ensuring high-quality work and unblocked engineers.
• Design, build, and test the foundation for compliant payroll for millions.
• Scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications.
• Collaborate on complex problems with Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, Compliance, Operations, and other teams.
• Mentor fellow engineers to create scalable solutions.
• Drive product development from concept to launch.
• Improve team productivity with services, tools, and APIs.
• Engage with advancements in AI and Machine Learning.

Requirements

• 15+ years of experience.
• Ability to build maintainable, structured, and well-documented code.
• Strong knowledge of data structures, modeling, and system design.
• Experience in cross-team collaboration influencing product and team direction.
• Experience working on platform products.
• Background in engineering, designing, and supporting large-scale systems in production.
• Aptitude for simplifying complex problems and communicating effectively with stakeholders.
• Experience in regulated domains like HR, Payroll, Taxes, or Compliance.
• Familiarity with AI tools for product development.
• Commitment to staying current with emerging backend technologies and AI frameworks.

Location

This is a primarily remote role. However, Gusto encourages employees in Denver, San Francisco, and New York to work from the office 2-3 days a week. Remote work requires a secure, reliable internet connection.
