The role is for a Principal Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch - Search team, focusing on enhancing vector similarity search within Elasticsearch. The team operates globally, collaborating remotely to deliver high-quality search experiences.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to create an industry-leading vector database, ensuring speed and relevance in search.
• Contribute to Elasticsearch full-time, developing new search features and resolving bugs.
• Collaborate with a distributed team of engineers on vector search capabilities.
• Serve as an expert on vector similarity in Elasticsearch and improve functionality.
• Engage with community members on issues and pull requests, assisting where necessary.
• Write idiomatic modern Java, as Elasticsearch is primarily Java-based.

Requirements

• Experience with vector similarity techniques in search platforms.
• Professional experience with vector databases and relevant algorithms.
• Strong core Java skills, including familiarity with data structures and concurrency constructs.
• Ability to work autonomously, managing projects from start to finish.
• Experience in collaborative development and giving/receiving feedback.
• Familiarity with several data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch and PostgreSQL.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven track record of leveraging AI for development and optimization.
• Able to collaborate across functions and teams effectively.
