Senior Software Engineer, Back-end (Fraud) @Affirm

Overview

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. The company is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their fully remote team based in Europe, focused on fraud engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems.
• Design and implement real-time fraud decisioning services and APIs in Python or Kotlin.
• Build and evolve the platform for launching fraud decisioning in new countries.
• Integrate region-specific fraud and risk vendors and operationalize machine learning and AI signals for real-time decisioning.
• Support peers and stakeholders across the product development lifecycle, collaborating with various teams.
• Create and monitor metrics for operations and availability of systems, contributing to on-call efforts.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership, mentoring teammates and setting design standards.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
• Experience with distributed systems and infrastructure using AWS, MySQL/PostgreSQL, and Kubernetes.
• Strong system design skills with a track record of delivering maintainable services.
• Fluency with AI-driven engineering practices.
• Proficiency in SQL and working with data-rich environments.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices and safe production deployments.
• Strong communication skills in distributed teams.
• A proactive mindset focused on learning and team success.
• Experience with Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, or Chronosphere is a plus.
• Background in fraud prevention, risk systems, or real-time decisioning is advantageous.
• Experience in fintech or regulated environments is a plus.
