Overview

Gusto is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer to serve as a Technical Lead across multiple pods in the Money Group, the fastest-growing organization within the company, which focuses on building financial products for small businesses and their employees.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a Technical Lead across multiple pods, setting architectural direction and ensuring high-quality delivery.
• Define the technical vision and manage projects that align with long-term goals.
• Contribute to architecture connecting Gusto's People and Finance Stacks.
• Lead service migrations from a Ruby-on-Rails monolith to a service-oriented architecture.
• Manage a partner ecosystem and lead technical due diligence.
• Build prototypes to de-risk new ideas and aid product decisions.
• Drive AI-native architecture decisions related to financial management experiences.
• Mentor engineers and promote technical excellence within the team.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• Deep experience in financial infrastructure, such as account management, money movement, and card systems.
• Proven track record in engineering and operating large interconnected production systems.
• Strong abilities in defining technical vision and contributing to multi-quarter architectural initiatives.
• Excellent communication skills to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools.

Benefits

• Competitive base pay targeted at $189,000–$236,000 per year in Denver and most remote locations, and $223,000–$278,000 per year in San Francisco, Seattle, and New York.
• Stock equity offered in addition to cash compensation.
• Flexible work environment including remote work options with required office attendance 2-3 days a week for specific locations.
