Job Summary

Spark Climate Solutions is seeking an experienced Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Policy Consultant to lead efforts in integrating atmospheric methane observations into national greenhouse gas inventories for 3–5 countries.

This role involves applying atmospheric inversion models and sensor data to improve emission accounting, supporting climate mitigation strategies under the UNFCCC framework.

Position Overview

The consultant will develop approaches for translating atmospheric methane measurements—collected via ground, airborne, or satellite sensors—into actionable insights within national greenhouse gas inventories.

The role involves working closely with atmospheric inversion model outputs to enhance transparency and accuracy in emissions reporting, aligning with IPCC guidelines and the UNFCCC transparency framework.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement case studies demonstrating how atmospheric methane data can improve national inventories
• Collaborate with government agencies, UN bodies, and inventory compilers to translate atmospheric observations into policy-relevant data

• Develop strategies for integrating atmospheric measurements into existing national greenhouse gas reporting frameworks
• Engage with selected countries to pilot approaches and facilitate capacity building

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of national greenhouse gas inventories and IPCC inventory methodologies
• Strong understanding of the UNFCCC transparency framework, including Biennial Transparency Reports, NDCs, and the Global Stocktake
• Experience with atmospheric methane observations, inversion modeling, or emissions verification

• Background in methane emissions accounting across sectors such as energy, agriculture, waste, wetlands, or natural systems
• Proven experience working with government agencies, international climate organizations, or climate initiatives

Eligibility & Application Details

• Minimum commitment of 30-50% effort over one year, beginning September 2026 or sooner
