Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Visual AI @Pinterest

Overview

Pinterest is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer for their Visual AI team within the Pinterest Labs organization. This role involves working with large-scale visual models to enhance the platform’s AI capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Build state-of-the-art visual encoders, VLMs, and diffusion models that power Pinterest's visual AI capabilities.
• Experiment with billion-scale image datasets, backed by large-scale GPU computing.
• Develop flexible visual reasoning tools, such as composed image retrieval and generative editing models.
• Engage with academic research papers and contribute to the company's AI strategy.
• Construct data agents to create and share training data across multiple modalities.
• Collaborate with product and infrastructure engineers to implement new capabilities.
• Publish findings in conferences and mentor junior researchers and interns.
• Work with a team distributed across various locations, including San Francisco and remote roles.

Requirements

• M.S. or PhD in Machine Learning or related areas, or equivalent work experience.
• Proven experience in building and training large-scale vision models.
• Familiarity with multimodal representations and visual language modeling is preferred.
• Track record of research contributions and/or shipping ML models to production.
• Hands-on experience with large-scale model training and modern deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
• Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in fast-paced environments.
• Experience with AI-accelerated research tools.

Location

This role is remote within the United States, with occasional in-office collaboration required 1-2 times per quarter.
