Staff Software Engineer, Bazel & Go @Instacart

Overview

The Developer Experience team at Instacart is focused on empowering over 1000 engineers by defining and building platforms and tools that facilitate high-quality software development. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead initiatives around Bazel, the build system, and Go, a core backend language.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the technical direction of Instacart's Bazel build system, including remote caching and performance optimization.
• Oversee the technical direction for the Go platform and related frameworks.
• Design and implement initiatives to improve build times, CI reliability, and developer experience.
• Define and measure developer experience metrics to prioritize improvements.
• Collaborate with various engineering teams to implement changes with minimal disruption.
• Set standards for reliability, performance, and developer ergonomics of the systems you manage.
• Mentor engineers and grow the community of Bazel and Go experts at Instacart.
• Represent the team in cross-organizational technical discussions.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software development experience.
• Hands-on expertise in Bazel, including performance tuning.
• Strong background in writing and operating Go services at scale.
• Experience leading technical initiatives that impact developer velocity and build performance.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and distributed systems.
• Strong leadership skills, able to influence and mentor others.
