Overview

The role of Staff Software Engineer in Business Insurance at Gusto involves building the next generation of business insurance purchase experiences. Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test core Business Insurance products that are reliable and scalable.
• Implement innovative AI-powered Business Insurance experiences.
• Rapidly iterate based on feedback and metrics once features are live.
• Collaborate with product, design, and XF partners to shape ideas and iterate on end-to-end experiences.
• Mentor and develop engineers within the team, enhancing team capabilities through pairing, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software development experience with at least 2 years in customer-facing products at scale.
• AI-native mindset with tools integrated into daily workflows.
• Experience delivering impact-driven, end-to-end multi-quarter projects.
• Ability to simplify complex problems with strong documentation and communication skills.
• Solid experience in Platform and Application Engineering (e.g., services, APIs, data flows, observability).
• Hands-on experience building, deploying, and evaluating AI solutions in production environments is a plus.
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails and Python is beneficial.

Benefits

Gusto offers competitive base pay, benefits, and additional stock equity. Compensation for this role ranges from $163,000 to $204,000 in most remote locations, and from $197,000 to $247,000 for positions in San Francisco and New York, depending on experience.

Location

This position allows remote work but requires two days of onboarding at a Gusto office. Candidates in Denver, San Francisco, or New York may need to work in-office 2-3 days per week.
