Overview

Instacart is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its Data Governance and Foundations Team. This role focuses on the architecture and delivery of the company's data ecosystem, including governance and multi-engine compute strategies, while balancing reliability with future scale and cost efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

• Translate Instacart’s data strategy into a multi-year architecture roadmap.
• Own the open lakehouse foundation, delivering unified table formats and governance.
• Drive real-time and streaming infrastructure for critical use cases.
• Pioneer AI-native data infrastructure engineering by applying LLM/AI tools.
• Elevate engineering excellence through mentoring and architecture reviews.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience in data infrastructure or distributed systems.
• Hands-on expertise with modern data lakehouse architectures (e.g., Apache Iceberg).
• Experience with event-driven and streaming infrastructure (e.g., Kafka).
• Proven ownership of major platform transitions delivered to production.
• Ability to build cost/benefit models for infrastructure investments.
