Overview
The Staff Software Engineer, Edge role at Pinterest involves leading efforts to manage automation traffic at the Edge, while influencing the future of the rate limiting platform that connects over 600 million users. The Edge team is responsible for various systems including CDN, TLS, DNS, and others.
Key Responsibilities
- Build Edge systems integrating in-house implementation and open-source software, balancing community resources and vendor orchestration.
- Design solutions for managing automation traffic in the Edge space, focusing on bots and crawlers.
- Implement request processing logic in Envoy, supporting routing, traffic classification, and enforcement.
- Collaborate with CDN vendors and internal teams to define integration points.
- Analyze and prioritize internal user pain points regarding the rate limiting platform.
- Mentor engineers and demonstrate technical leadership through design reviews and coaching.
- Utilize AI to enhance prototyping and operational tasks while ensuring production readiness.
- Participate in on-call duties for Edge systems, driving incident responses and improvements.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in infrastructure or platform engineering, focusing on traffic management systems.
- Experience in bot detection and automation traffic management is advantageous.
- Proficiency in C++, Golang, or Python; experience developing L7 HTTP proxies is required.
- Deep understanding of network protocols and experience in debugging networking issues at scale.
- Ability to gather requirements and align cross-functional stakeholders effectively.
- Proven experience designing distributed systems and bringing them to production.
- Experience leveraging AI in engineering workflows, with a focus on validating outcomes.
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Benefits
This role is eligible for equity, and a salary range is provided: $177,185 — $364,795 USD.
Location
This position is remote but requires in-office collaboration 1-2 times every 6 months. Applicants must be located in the United States.
