Staff Software Engineer, Orders Platform @Instacart

Overview

The Commerce Platform organization at Instacart is seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to lead foundational platform initiatives on the Orders Platform team. This role involves defining and driving the architectural strategy for systems that support hundreds of millions of transactions each year.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead multi-team initiatives that improve the reliability, scalability, and correctness of the Orders platform.
• Define and drive the technical strategy for the order lifecycle.
• Architect and evolve event-driven, idempotent workflows for core order flows such as creation, updates, and payments.
• Partner closely with engineering and cross-functional teams to deliver durable platform capabilities.
• Modernize and extend the platform through improved consistency models and secure integrations.
• Design platform capabilities for agentic commerce.
• Raise the technical bar by leading design reviews and coaching engineers.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience designing and operating large-scale backend systems.
• Proven experience leading complex, cross-functional technical initiatives.
• Strong foundation in distributed systems and high-volume APIs.
• Proficiency in backend programming languages such as Go, Java, or Python.
• Production experience with relational and NoSQL data stores.
• Experience with mission-critical services management.
• Strong communication skills with experience working with senior engineers and stakeholders.
