Staff Software Engineer, Retirement @Gusto

Overview

Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to focus on building and managing systems that assist businesses in offering and managing 401(k) plans. The role involves working closely with product, compliance, and operations teams to deliver reliable software solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, maintain, and ship features for 401(k) management.
• Identify opportunities for architecture modifications to support new capabilities.
• Define and promote engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with product, design, and operations for production-ready solutions.
• Debug production issues and enhance reliability, observability, and operational tools.
• Collaborate with engineering teams for system integration.
• Write clear, reliable, well-tested code that scales effectively.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with production platforms.
• Experience with services and APIs.
• Familiarity with message-based systems (e.g., Sidekiq, SQS, NServiceBus).
• Experience with GraphQL.
• Good knowledge of modern frontend applications (like React).
• Ability to manage systems end-to-end, including operational duties.
• Experience collaborating with PMs and cross-functional teams.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails or similar backend frameworks.

Benefits

Competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) are provided. Cash compensation ranges from $163,000 to $204,000 for remote positions in Denver, with higher amounts for San Francisco and New York.

Location

This is a remote role available to candidates in the United States. Employees based in Gusto's office locations (Denver, San Francisco, New York) are expected to work from the office 2-3 days a week.
