Overview

The Staff Software Engineer, Service Communications role at Pinterest involves leading technical strategy for high-layer networking systems that ensure reliable and secure service-to-service interactions. Candidates will work with advanced service mesh technologies and collaborate on infrastructure needs across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and deploy advanced service mesh features focusing on service discovery, traffic shaping, and observability using Envoy proxy.
• Lead the adoption of service identity and mTLS for critical security requirements.
• Design traffic optimization primitives to reduce data transfer costs for high-volume service traffic.
• Maintain and modernize service framework libraries in Java, Python, and C++.
• Collaborate with service owners to drive infrastructure requirements and emerging feature needs.
• Partner with infrastructure peers on multi-region and multi-cloud strategies.
• Utilize AI to enhance analysis and iteration in engineering workflows.
• Participate in on-call rotation to manage incident response and drive reliability improvements.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in infrastructure or platform engineering, particularly in distributed systems.
• Deep expertise in service mesh technologies such as Envoy or Istio.
• Proficiency in Java, Python, and C++, with experience in building internal libraries or developer tools.
• Strong understanding of service security, including mTLS adoption.
• Proven ability to design efficient distributed systems at scale.
• Experience in driving the adoption of complex platform capabilities.
• Experience using AI to enhance engineering workflows.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.

Benefits

Base salary range between $177,185 and $364,795 USD, with eligibility for equity. Additional benefits can be found on Pinterest's culture and benefits page.

Location

This is a remote position within the United States, with in-office collaboration required 1-2 times every six months.
