Overview

Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Tax Accounts team, focusing on simplifying interactions with tax authorities for small businesses. The role involves managing employer and employee tax account data, ensuring compliance, and enhancing operational efficiency through automation.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test systems for employer and employee tax accounts, including registrations and filings.
• Develop automation tools to maintain access with tax agencies and ensure accurate account management.
• Model compliance rules into reliable systems and ensure high performance and correctness.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and PEO teams to develop solutions based on customer needs.
• Mentor team members and assist in solving complex engineering challenges at scale.
• Create user-friendly products that meet customer expectations.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software development experience with staff-level technical leadership.
• Proven track record of managing multi-quarter projects with measurable impact.
• Experience in building scalable solutions in a compliance-heavy domain.
• Proficiency in designing data models and APIs, especially in complex systems.
• Experience with AI tools to enhance development and testing processes.
• Strong mentoring skills and effective communication within engineering teams and with stakeholders.

Benefits

Competitive cash compensation targeted at $163,000–$204,000 for most remote locations and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is also provided.

Location

This role is primarily remote but requires attendance at Gusto's office for onboarding. Employees in San Francisco are expected to work in the office on designated days (2-3 days per week).
