Staff Software Engineer, Tax Experiences @Gusto

Overview

Gusto is on a mission to grow the small business economy by managing payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR. The Staff Software Engineer will enhance the experience of tax collection, calculation, payment, and filing for its customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute on the technical strategy aligned with team and group-level OKRs, contributing to the broader Tax Engineering roadmap.
• Design, build, and test experiences for users managing their tax information.
• Advocate for customers to ensure proper tax management.
• Collaborate on complex problems across multiple teams including Engineering, Product Management, and Compliance.
• Support a software platform that serves millions of businesses.
• Mentor fellow engineers in creating scalable solutions.
• Drive product development from concept to launch, simplifying payroll and tax processes.
• Identify and prioritize long-term investments to improve systems and architecture.
• Apply AI tools to enhance development processes and simplify workflows.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with expertise in React and TypeScript, and familiarity with Ruby on Rails and SQL.
• Experience in Payroll, Taxes, or Compliance domains.
• Ability to work with large, complex codebases and deliver production-level code at scale.
• Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on simplifying complexity.
• Experience with AI tools in development.
• Collaborative attitude and strong communication skills to work with cross-functional teams.
• Strong systems thinking and analytical skills.
