Staff Software Engineer, Time and Scheduling @Gusto

Overview

Gusto is on a mission to grow the small business economy, handling payroll, health insurance, and HR so owners can focus on their customers. They are seeking a Staff Software Engineer for their Time and Scheduling product team to develop customer-facing products and features that power small business livelihoods.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test Gusto core products across the Time domain.
• Mentor other engineers to solve complex technical problems.
• Scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to address customer pain points and deliver solutions.
• Build products that customers genuinely love.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• Experience building scalable solutions and a passion for memorable customer experiences.
• Familiarity with AI tools to enhance development and testing.
• Curiosity in applying AI frameworks safely across teams.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that have measurable customer impact.
• Ability to mentor engineers and foster a collaborative, test-driven environment.
• Experience in Ruby on Rails is preferred.
• Strong communication skills for effective collaboration across teams.

Benefits

Competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) based on role, level, and location. Cash compensation targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in most remote locations and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco and New York.

Location

This position is remote, but travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required. Employees based in New York will have to work from the office 2-3 days per week.
