    The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) offers a six-month Strategic Engagement Internship in New York, United States. The program provides a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain practical experience in international development, sustainable finance, and multilateral engagement.

    About UNCDF

    Established under General Assembly Resolution 2186 (XXI), UNCDF operates as an autonomous organization within the United Nations system. Its mission is to assist developing countries, particularly least developed countries, by mobilizing capital through grants, loans, and guarantees. UNCDF focuses on increasing investment flows for projects that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote economic growth and equitable prosperity.

    UNCDF functions as a catalytic blended finance platform, deploying resources to crowd in additional public and private sector investment. Its strategic focus supports three key priority areas:

    • SME Finance – enabling small and medium-sized enterprises to access capital and grow sustainably.
    • Sub-National Finance – supporting local governments and communities in infrastructure and development projects.
    • Digital Finance – advancing financial inclusion through digital tools and innovative technologies.

    The organization maintains regional hubs in Dakar, Nairobi, and Bangkok, with sub-regional offices in the Caribbean and Pacific regions. The Executive Secretary, based in New York, oversees operations, supported by divisions including the Investment and Implementation Division (IID), Investment and Finance Oversight Division (IFOD), and Operations and Oversight Division (OOD).

    Strategic Funds Unit (SFU)

    UNCDF’s Strategic Funds Unit (SFU) enhances its capacity to deploy blended finance solutions that mobilize capital at scale. The SFU works closely with UN agencies and partners to leverage investments aligned with global climate, biodiversity, and SDG commitments. Its responsibilities include:

    • Providing technical and administrative support to Strategic Funds Steering Committees.
    • Managing day-to-day fund operations and resource mobilization strategies.
    • Facilitating fund proposal development and partnership engagement.
    • Monitoring operational risks and fund performance.
    • Supporting project appraisal, reporting, and closure processes.

    Internship Overview

    Reporting to the External Relations Advisor, the intern will collaborate with the Strategic Engagement Team to support institutional positioning, resource mobilization, and engagement with Member States and partners. Key responsibilities include:

    Strategy and Partner Engagement

    • Preparing briefing notes, talking points, and engagement materials for senior management.
    • Developing tailored partnership documents for donors, UN entities, multilateral partners, and private sector stakeholders.
    • Conducting research on donor priorities, development finance trends, and global policy processes.
    • Supporting UNCDF’s value proposition and positioning across priority countries and thematic areas.
    • Providing analytical support for high-level meetings and consultations.

    Resource Mobilization

    • Conducting donor research to inform core and non-core funding initiatives.
    • Preparing presentations and briefing materials for outreach to potential contributors.
    • Mapping partnership opportunities, including non-traditional and private sector actors.
    • Monitoring donor trends, policy shifts, and evolving funding landscapes.

    Investment Committee Secretariat and Gender Strategy

    • Supporting secretariat functions for investment committees, including meeting preparation and follow-up.
    • Reviewing and organizing investment memos and internal briefing materials.
    • Maintaining internal trackers and dashboards for investment pipelines.
    • Supporting the Corporate Gender focal point to advance women’s economic empowerment initiatives.
    • Contributing to portfolio oversight and institutional learning processes.

    Required Qualifications

    • Enrollment in a postgraduate program, final year of undergraduate study, or recent graduate within one year of degree completion.
    • Field of study: International Affairs, International Development, Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related disciplines.
    • Fluency in English required; French and other UN languages are advantageous.
    • Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in multicultural, international environments.

    Desired Skills

    • Proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, and report writing for translating complex ideas into clear presentations.
    • Knowledge of sustainable finance, international development, or development finance institutions.
    • Prior experience in UN entities, multilateral organizations, consulting firms, or banking/financial sectors is a plus.

    Internship Conditions

    • Interns must provide proof of health insurance and may receive a stipend for basic expenses.
    • UNCDF is not responsible for accidents, illness, or death during the internship.
    • Interns are not staff members and cannot officially represent UNCDF.
