The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) has announced the opening of applications for The Kari Howard Fund for Narrative Journalism 2026, a grant program designed to support compelling narrative reporting projects by women and nonbinary journalists around the world.
Established in honor of the late editor Kari Howard, the fund seeks to advance the type of storytelling she championed—deeply reported narratives that bring readers closer to the people, communities, and issues shaping contemporary society.
Applications are open until 12 July 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST, with successful applicants expected to be notified by early September.
The Kari Howard Fund was created to encourage journalists to pursue ambitious reporting projects that combine strong storytelling with rigorous journalism.
Howard was widely recognized for encouraging writers to craft stories that captured the richness of everyday life while illuminating important social, political, and cultural issues. The fund continues that legacy by supporting journalists producing meaningful, human-centered narratives for English-language audiences.
Projects can focus on issues from any part of the world, provided reporting and publication are completed within six months of receiving the grant.
In previous funding cycles, grant awards have averaged approximately $5,000 per project.
The funding is intended to support reporting costs associated with developing and producing narrative journalism projects.
Eligible projects may include:
While projects may include multimedia elements, any additional formats must serve as supplements to a print-focused reporting project.
The opportunity is open to women, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming journalists whose primary profession is journalism.
Eligible applicants include:
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate professional journalism experience and a strong record of published work.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
The IWMF notes that digital publication is acceptable and projects do not need to appear in traditional newspapers or print magazines.
One of the distinctive features of the Kari Howard Fund is its international scope. Journalists reporting from any country are eligible to apply, allowing the program to support diverse voices and underreported stories from around the world.
The fund aims to encourage reporting that introduces audiences to new perspectives, communities, and experiences while maintaining the highest standards of journalistic excellence.
Applicants should take note of the following key dates:
Through this annual grant program, the International Women’s Media Foundation continues to honor Kari Howard’s commitment to narrative journalism that combines emotional depth, strong reporting, and social relevance.
For journalists seeking funding to pursue impactful storytelling projects, The Kari Howard Fund for Narrative Journalism 2026 offers an important opportunity to develop and publish stories that inform, engage, and connect audiences across borders and communities.
