    Job Summary

    The Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB) seeks a Climate-Resilient Labour Mobility Specialist to lead the development of a global framework for responsible business practices addressing climate-related migration and workforce resilience.

    The role involves designing analytical tools, engaging stakeholders across Africa, South Asia, and the Americas, and piloting innovative commitments with businesses in climate-exposed sectors.

    The consultant will work closely with IHRB’s Migration and Just Transition teams, contributing to global climate adaptation strategies that incorporate migrant workers’ rights and resilience.

    About IHRB and the Climate Initiative

    IHRB is a leading think tank dedicated to ensuring corporate responsibility in respecting human rights.

    Its new initiative, Resilience by Design, Not by Afterthought, focuses on integrating climate adaptation and labour mobility, especially concerning migrant workers in sectors like agriculture, construction, and logistics.

    The goal is to create systemic resilience by making labour mobility safer, more inclusive, and climate-informed, unlocking significant economic and social benefits.

    Role Overview

    The consultant will primarily be responsible for designing and delivering a Climate-Resilient Labour Mobility Framework for Business, aimed at helping companies adapt their workforce strategies in the face of climate risks.

    The role involves conducting risk analyses, developing a sector-specific framework aligned with IHRB’s standards, and securing pilot commitments from businesses across three key corridors: Africa-Gulf, South Asia, and the Americas.

    The work will be global in scope but rooted in deep African expertise and networks.

    Key Responsibilities

    Climate Risk and Labour Mobility Analysis

    • Conduct desk review of existing knowledge on climate and migration nexus.
    • Map climate-induced migration patterns, labour risks, and vulnerabilities.
    • Identify gaps and emerging practices in climate-resilient labour mobility.
    • Produce a synthesis report by September 2026, with revisions by October 2026.

    Development of the Climate-Resilient Labour Mobility Framework

    • Assess IHRB’s existing migration principles against climate-resilience gaps.
    • Design the framework architecture, principles, indicators, and enabling conditions.

    • Incorporate corridor-specific insights, especially from Africa, while maintaining a global scope.
    • Ensure practical applicability across industries and operational contexts.
    • Aim for initial presentation by December 2026, with final release at the GFRR in Q3 2027.

    Pilot Engagement and Implementation

    • Identify and engage with business actors in the Africa corridor willing to pilot the framework.
    • Shape pilot commitments and facilitate their implementation.
    • Develop a practitioner guidance note and summary document.
    • Support dissemination activities and participate in IHRB’s global forums, including GFRR.

    Target Audience

    • Global brands in climate-exposed sectors with significant migrant workforces.
    • Recruitment and employment agencies in key migration corridors.
    • Policymakers in both sending and receiving countries.
    • Migrant worker networks, advocates, and civil society.
    • Investors and ESG stakeholders interested in climate and migration risks.

    About You

    Essential Experience & Skills

    • 7+ years at the intersection of labour migration and climate change, with demonstrated expertise.
    • Deep knowledge of African labour markets and climate impacts on migration.
    • Recognized relationships with African policymakers and regional bodies.
    • Proven experience designing frameworks or standards for business audiences.

    • Experience engaging with large employers in climate-exposed sectors.
    • Strong command of English, with excellent analytical and communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently, manage complex projects, and adapt to emerging insights.

    Desirable Attributes

    • Familiarity with IHRB’s work on responsible recruitment and supply chains.
    • Experience with other corridors beyond Africa (South Asia, Americas).
    • Existing networks with climate/migration practitioners.
    • Past involvement in pilot projects with businesses.
    • Entrepreneurial mindset, collaborative approach, rigorous yet accessible work style.

    Timeframe & Contract Details

    • Start Date: August 2026
    • End Date: September 2027
    • Location: Fully remote, preferably with strong African networks and working hours overlapping East Africa or India Standard Time.

    • Hours: Approximately 2.5 days/week (~14 months)
    • Compensation: £32,000 total (all-inclusive), negotiable for exceptional candidates
