    The Engine Room works to strengthen the fight for social justice by supporting civil society to use technology and data in strategic, effective and responsible ways.

    We partner with human rights defenders, activists, journalists, and community organisations to conduct rigorous and ethical research that centers the needs and knowledge of communities most affected by the issues we study and at the frontlines of justice work across the Majority World.

    About the Role

    The Engine Room is seeking an experienced technologist with expertise in chatbot systems to provide technical support in the design, development and/or optimization of a chatbot solution.

    The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with the development of conversational systems for social justice, and a strong commitment to responsible data and safety practices.

    The role focuses on designing systems that engage safely and meaningfully with users across different contexts in the Global Majority, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

    Qualifications

    Essential Skills and Experience

    • Demonstrated expertise in chatbot development and conversational AI, including hands-on experience building and deploying chatbot systems
    • Strong background in NLP, machine learning, or AI systems, with familiarity with current LLM-based and rule-based conversational frameworks

    • Experience applying responsible data and security practices, including privacy-by-design, encryption, secure hosting, data minimization, and incident response
    • Understanding of deploying chatbots in multilingual, low-connectivity, or high-risk contexts (e.g., gender-based violence, social justice)
    • Strong communication skills, capable of translating technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders

    Desirable Skills (Optional)

    • Fluency in English and Spanish
    • Experience designing or advising on technology projects in the Global Majority, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean

    Important Note on AI Usage

    The Engine Room is cautious in AI adoption and carefully considers AI tools in its work. Applicants will need to disclose any AI tools they plan to use during the consultancy.

    The organization does not permit AI generated by authoritarian regimes and does not rely on AI tools for programming, research, manuscript drafting, editing, or writing.

    Scope of Work

    The consultant will develop research and provide technical advice through all stages of chatbot development:

    Research

    • Assess organizational needs
    • Review technical architecture, user flows, and data collection mechanisms
    • Identify priority areas for responsible data integration and security

    Strategy and Design

    • Define chatbot models and architectures
    • Develop recommendations on frameworks and data systems emphasizing responsible data and safety

    Development and Testing

    • Create implementation pathways
    • Develop action plans for security enhancements, data protection, and platform improvements such as encryption standards, secure server infrastructure, and incident response protocols

    Maintenance and Sustainability

    • Support long-term chatbot adoption through documentation and ongoing technical support

    Compensation and Application Process

    This is a remote consultancy role with a total of 6 working days spread over two months. The daily rate is $350 USD. Specific working days will be coordinated with the project team for flexibility.
