Malteser International (MI), a global humanitarian organization operating in Nigeria since 2017, is currently recruiting for the position of Health Officer in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Malteser International is actively implementing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions in Northeast Nigeria, particularly in Borno State, to improve the wellbeing of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities. Its interventions include access to safe water, sanitation facilities, hygiene promotion, and emergency health responses, all delivered through participatory, gender-sensitive, and inclusive approaches.
The Health Officer will play a critical role in managing Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs) and supporting cholera outbreak response activities. Key responsibilities include overseeing daily ORP operations, ensuring adherence to national cholera treatment protocols, assessing and managing patients with acute watery diarrhoea, and facilitating timely referrals to Cholera Treatment Centres (CTCs).
The role also involves enforcing Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures, conducting community health education on hygiene and cholera prevention, and ensuring adequate stock management of medical supplies such as ORS, Zinc, and PPE. Additionally, the officer will maintain accurate patient records, support disease surveillance, and collaborate with health authorities and humanitarian partners.
Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a related health discipline, along with valid professional registration where applicable. A minimum of three years of experience in humanitarian or public health programs—especially in cholera response or communicable disease control—is required. Experience working in ORPs, CTUs, or with international NGOs is an added advantage.
Candidates should demonstrate strong clinical, organizational, and reporting skills, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office tools. Fluency in English is required, while knowledge of Hausa or Kanuri is considered an advantage. The role requires flexibility, including frequent travel to project sites and availability during weekends or emergency responses.
The position is based in Maiduguri with a proposed start date of July 2026. The contract will run until September 2026, with the possibility of extension. Benefits include a competitive salary, health insurance (individual or family plan), group life insurance, 13th-month pay, and various leave entitlements.
