Hivos, an international development organization guided by humanist values, is recruiting a Program Officer to join the EU SWITCH Kenya Green initiative. The program seeks to accelerate Kenya’s transition to a circular and inclusive green economy. The position is based in Nairobi, Kenya, with full-time hours (40 per week). About EU SWITCH Kenya Green
Building on the foundations of EU SWITCH Africa Green (2020–2023), the program leverages proven strategies to support sustainable consumption and production. With a €5 million investment from the European Commission, EU SWITCH Kenya Green focuses on:
- Facilitating Kenya’s transition to a circular, inclusive, and future-fit green economy
- Blending high-level policy cooperation with direct business support
- Promoting sustainability, access to finance, circular value chains, and green job creation
The program is implemented by a consortium of five organizations: Hivos, KCB Foundation, Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), SOMO, and United States International University–Africa (USIU-A).
Program Coverage
The initiative operates across eight counties, grouped into two regions:
- Nairobi Metropolitan: Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Machakos, Makueni
- Pwani Economic Bloc: Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale
Guided by a clear Theory of Change (ToC), the program focuses on:
- Empowering MSMEs with tools and knowledge
- Expanding access to finance and circular economy opportunities
- Reducing waste and promoting sustainable economic growth
- Increasing inclusive green job opportunities
Role Overview
Reporting to the Program Manager, the Program Officer will support the implementation of Hivos’ program activities, including:
- Managing day-to-day project operations
- Ensuring compliance with donor and internal standards
- Maintaining communications with consortium partners and stakeholders
- Tracking work plans, budgets, and program deliverables
- Supporting GESI (Gender Equity and Social Inclusion) tracking
Key Responsibilities
Program Implementation
- Assist in planning and executing Hivos’ work plan
- Support lobbying, advocacy, and policy influence at national and county levels
- Contribute to internal and external communications, including articles, blog posts, and media products
- Support event logistics, campaign planning, and budget tracking
Grant Management
- Maintain relationships with SWITCH Kenya Green partners
- Ensure timely follow-up on partner deliverables
- Support fund disbursement and documentation
- Assist partners with implementation as needed
- Support Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) processes
Filing and Documentation
- Maintain organized digital program files according to Hivos standards
- Ensure contracts, reports, MEL tools, and financial records are accessible for audits
- Track, label, and archive correspondence with version control
- Support audit preparation and compliance documentation
Requirements
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, development studies, public policy, environmental studies, project management, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- Additional certification in project management, MEL, or grant management is desirable
Professional Experience
- 4–5 years in program management, coordination, or related roles, preferably in an NGO or development context
- Knowledge of green/circular economy and MSME ecosystems
- Experience in project coordination, reporting, and multitasking
