    The International Rescue Committee is currently hiring for the role of Humanitarian Access Safety and Security Officer (HASSO) in Katsina, Nigeria. The organization was established in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein. It is known for delivering humanitarian aid and long-term support to people affected by conflict, disasters, and displacement.

    This position requires 1 to 3 years of relevant experience and is based in Katsina. The HASSO will work under the supervision of the Senior Humanitarian Access Safety and Security Manager. Moreover, the officer will support efforts to maintain and expand safe humanitarian access to conflict-affected populations. The role focuses on implementing security management plans in line with humanitarian principles, duty of care, and gender equality standards.

    The officer will assist in developing and implementing access strategies tailored to local contexts. In addition, they will ensure that the organization’s mission is well understood and accepted within communities. They will engage stakeholders to promote safe program delivery and contribute to assessments for expanding operations into new areas. Strengthening relationships, improving acceptance strategies, and enhancing the organization’s visibility and reputation are key aspects of the role.

    In terms of safety and security risk management, the candidate will support the development of procedures and contingency plans. They will organize regular security meetings, maintain training records, and ensure the availability of safety equipment such as first aid and emergency kits. The role also involves conducting risk assessments of offices and operational areas. In addition, the candidate must maintain security databases and support incident tracking and reporting.

    The HASSO will play an active role in liaison and networking by building relationships with local stakeholders and authorities to improve humanitarian access. They will analyze barriers to access and develop strategies to address them, particularly in hard-to-reach or high-risk areas. Monitoring the operating environment, identifying threats, and providing regular contextual analysis reports are also essential responsibilities.

    Additionally, the officer will support training and capacity building by organizing security briefings and facilitating staff training on safety protocols. They will help ensure that all staff adhere to the organization’s minimum safety and security standards.

    Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Security Management or a related field. They should have practical experience in security management, particularly in humanitarian or insecure environments, and be fluent in English and at least one local language. Strong analytical, reporting, and interpersonal skills are required, along with experience in risk assessment, incident reporting, and security training. Familiarity with communication systems such as HF Codan, Motorola VHF, and satellite systems is an advantage.

    Knowledge of the context in northwest Nigeria and prior experience with international NGOs are considered beneficial. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
